June Update

Welcome to the homepage of NBT’s Learning and Access department.

Over the past two years, we have been working in partnership with Beckfoot School, Innovation North – Leeds Metropolitan University and Creative Partnerships on an exciting project called Symbiosis, exploring dance through science and science through dance.  This multi-faceted project is culminating this summer with the launch of an interactive DVD at a conference for teachers, educators and arts specialists at Beckfoot School in Bingley on Wednesday 16 July 2008.

The interactive DVD is for secondary science and PE/dance teachers and covers part of the GCSE Science curriculum, the Earth in the Universe.  It demonstrates how scientific concepts can be taught through movement activities, how dance can be created from these concepts, and explores methods for producing dance material and choreographic devices.

The conference is an opportunity for participants to share best practice, experience science and dance workshops and meet the creative team and students who took part in Symbiosis.  They will also receive a free copy of the DVD.  To book a place at the conference, contact fdrake@beckfoot.bradford.sch.uk  After the conference copies of the DVD will be distributed free of charge and anyone wishing to request a copy can do so by contacting: sophie.alder@northernballettheatre.co.uk

We are now recruiting participants for this summer’s Gallery 37 Plus, a five-week (3 days a week) dance training programme for young people aged 16 to 24 who are not currently in education or employment.  Working with professional dance artists Sharon Watson (ex-Phoenix Dancer and Rehearsal Director ) and NBT’s Dance Education Officer, Sophie Alder, participants will learn about dance technique and create their own dance piece for a performance at The Carriageworks on 4th September.  As well as working towards their Bronze Arts Award, participants will find out what it’s really like to work in a creative environment, opening up routes to further training and employment.  For more information and an application form, contact Samantha Blackburn on 0113 247 8539 or email: samantha.blackburn@leeds.gov.uk

If you are interested in being involved with the any of our projects or would like to book a schools workshop please contact us on 0113 2745355. [Information for Schools Booklet]
