Nacho Duarto

Nacho Duato was born in Valencia, Spain and at the age of eighteen began his professional ballet training with the Rambert School in London. He continued his studies at Maurice Béjart’s Mudra School in Brussels, before completing his dance education at the Alvin Ailey American Dance Centre, in New York.

In 1980 Duato signed his first professional contract with the Cullberg Ballet in Stockholm, where he was quickly incorporated into the company and repertoire.
In 1987 he received the VSCD Gouden Dansprijs (Golden Dance Award), for his achievements as a dancer. His natural talent for choreography soon took him beyond the limitations of dancer and in 1983 Jardi Tancat, a collaboration with his compatriot Maria del Mar Bonet, was a major success winning first prize at the International Choreographic Workshop at Cologne.

In 1988 Nacho was named Resident Choreographer for Nederlands Dans Theater - working alongside Hans van Manen and Jiri Kylian. His work for Nederlands Dans Theater includes: Danza y Rito, Ucelli, Synaphai, Bolero, Arenal, Chansons Madecasses and Raptus; he collaborated on almost every work with painter/designer Walter Nobbe, who proved to be a constant inspiration.

As demand for his work from international companies increased Nacho had to take a decisive step towards choosing his future career. As choreographer his ballets now form part of the repertoires of leading companies including: Cullberg Ballet, Nederlands Dans Theater, Les Grand Ballets Canadiens, Deutsche Oper Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, Australian Ballet, Stuttgart Ballet, Royal Danish Ballet, Royal Swedish Ballet, San Francisco Ballet, The Royal Ballet and Northern ballet Theatre, to name just a few.

In 1990 Nacho Duato was invited by the Instituto Nacional de las Artes Escénicas y de la Musica of the Spanish Ministry of Culture, to become Artistic Director of Compania Nacional de Danza, where he created the following works: Concierto Madrigal (J.Rodrigo), Opus Piat (L.V.Beethoven), Empty (Collage), Coming Together (F.Rzewski), Mediterrania (Collage), Cautiva (A. Iglesias) , Alone, for a second (E. Satie), Tabulae (A. Iglesias), Ecos (S. Micus), Cero sobre Cero (A. Iglesias), Por Vos Muero and Self. Self was his fourth creation with Alberto Iglesias; it premiered last April at Palacio de Festivales de Cantabria in Santander and was a co-production with Theatre Saint Quentin En Yvelines in Pàris. His other works include : Remansos ( E. Granados), Romeo and Julia ( S. Prokoviev), Without Words ( F. Schubert), Multiplicity, Forms of Silence and Emptiness ( J. Bach).Arcangel o( A. Corelli), Castrati ( Vivaldi-Jenkins), White Darkness ( Jenkins), L´homme ( Kurtag).

In 1995 he was awarded Chevalier dans l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres which is given annually by the French Embassy in Spain.
